Hurrican Katrina was one of the costliest storms
our country has encountered during my lifetime as a Mississippians. I was
a small boy in Jackson, Mississippians when Hurricane Camille struck the
Gulf Coast in 1969. During Hurricane Camille, I could feel the Category 5 winds howling at 75 mph
as far as Jackson with gusts of wind still raging as far as Memphis. Until
this day, I never knew the real power of a hurricane until I experienced
it through this raw video footage.
This video provides a minute-by-minute account of
Katrina’s eyewall from the time winds reached Category 4, until the epic
28 foot storm surge that rumbled onto the Gulfport Beachfront Hotel and
all of Gulf Port. Storm chasers Mike Theiss and Jim Reed documents the
entire storm from the lobby of the Gulfport Beachfront Hotel - located
about 100 yards from the Gulf of Mexico.
