of Automotive Fluids –
Green or yellow - glycol-based
inorganic, contains silicates – prevent corrosion - 3 years or 36,000 miles
Orange – glycol-based organic
acid, for Long Life/ Extended Life coolant - 5 years or 150,000
Yellow/orange – hybrid mixture
of the both types with nitrites added - 5 years or 150,000Volks & Audi
Brake Fluid with Boiling
Dot 3 (140C) and Dot 4 (155C)
are mostly clear but available in Pale Yellow, Blue, or Crimson Red. Dot
5.1 (180C) is available in Purple & Violet colors. Dot 3, Dot 4, and
Dot 5.1 will destroy paint. Dot 5 (180C) is mostly clear but available
in Pale Yellow and Blue - not Crimson Red. Dot 5 will not hurt paint -
Note: Color is not a distinguishing
characteristic of brake fluids. It is primarily used to identify leaks.
Engine / Motor Oil S =
Gasoline ( Petrol) and C = Diesel
Viscosity rating - 5w20,
5w30, 10w30, 10w40, 15w40, 20w50 (racing motor oils), and 80w90, 75w90
rating gasoline– SN - Introduced 2005 - improved oxidation resistance,
deposit protection and wear protection, also better low temperature performance
over the life of the oil, and also meet European and Asian auto makers
requirements. It has reduced phosphorus anti-wear additive.
rating diesel - CJ-4 - Introduced 2002 for diesels. It
meets previous CH-4 (1998), CG-4 (1995), and CF-4 (1990), and all older
four-stroke diesel engines. CF-2 (1994) is the API classification for two-stroke
muscle cars or hot rods with older flat tappet camshafts, you
should be aware that SN motor oils contain lower levels of anti-scuff additive
called "ZDDP" - Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate to extend the life of the
catalytic converters. Phosphorus can contaminate the catalyst over time
if the engine uses oil, causing an increase in tailpipe emissions.
Power steering Fluid Types
CHF 7.1, CHF 11S and CHF 202 – This fluid should not be mixed
with ATF fluids.
Multiple versions of Dexron
are sold by OE and aftermarket suppliers. Please refer to owner’s manual
or service manual for the correct Dexron type...
Windshield washer fluid
should clean road grime and bugs, remove light snow and ice, create water-beading
to help keep windshield clear, streak-free cleaning, and provide -25°F
F –Mostly used in cars in the 1970s vintage transmissions.
– most commonly used ATF. Both include friction modifiers.
Fluids – Stands for Highly Friction Modified includes friction
modifiers for vehicles that need a lot of reduced friction.
Fluids - offers better performance and service, with improved
resistance to heat, cold, oxidation, friction, and shearing. Synthetic
fluids are very popular today and are available from aftermarket brands
(which closely meet Dexron and Mercon specifications).
